5 Tips On Sofa Cleaning - E Home Services

Interior designers will always try to match furniture to the carpet and wall of your living room to make it dissent and attractive. They will even dictate to you the kind of upholstery to use on your sofa as well as dining sets. We all know that being humans we tend to have different tastes in nearly every aspect of life and the choice of upholstery material is no exception to this. This means we will end up with materials that are of the different texture, colors, and nature. With this in mind and in the quest to make our homes remain neat, then we need to clean the rooms including cleaning the sofas. Of course, we have the option of replacing the furniture but this can be an expensive affair bearing in mind that most of Singapore residents are not wealthy. Here are five tips which will help you to effectively clean you sofa without damaging the fabric.

Sofa Cleaning

Try and remove the stain from the material while still fresh

As the say, it is easier to make hay while the sun shines. It is very easy to remove a stain from a given fabric when the stain is still fresh. This will prevent the spill or stain from spreading to the wood. It will also prevent the stain from drying and setting the material.

In case of a spill, your very first action should be to try to blot the spill up using a piece of cloth, preferably white, to minimize the spread of the spill to a small area that you can manage to clean easily.

Always vacuum the upholstery before cleaning

When you realize the upholstery fabric is full of stains and spots and there is a need to clean it, always start by vacuum cleaning it to absorb the dirt and dust. Failure to do this will mean that you will have a very hard time trying to remove the same dirt and dust when the fabric is wet. The two will make the piece of furniture look horrible and it will really take you a lot of time and action to get rid of it.

Use the upholstery attachment to get into all crevices and cracks. You can as well use it to clean the cushions if your sofa is cushions type.

Use the vacuum cleaner to remove pet hair to the maximum and should it fail, use a pet hair remover. Before embarking on using a pet hair remover always ensure that you do research to establish which one works well on upholstery as there are very many kinds of pet hair removers.

Ensure that you establish the exact type of stain to clean

You should know that there is no single upholstery cleaner that can deal effectively with all kinds of stains. It is, therefore, important to know how to clean kinds of stains.

Oil or grease stain

Sprinkle the stained area with baking powder or cornstarch

Leave the sprinkle there for about 15 to 20 minutes for it to absorb the oil or grease

Vacuum clean the upholstery

Apply dry cleaning solvent to remove the remaining stain

Food and beverage stain

Pour 2 cups of cool water into a small basin

Add a tablespoon of dish washing liquid to form a solution

Take a dry piece of cloth and dip into the solution before using it to rub gently on the upholstery till you get rid of the stain.

It is important to note that this may not apply to all kinds of food and beverage stains. You are therefore advised to do further research or consult an expert in the industry to help you out.

Berry and fruits stains

Pour two-thirds of a cup of rubbing alcohol to a small basin

Add a teaspoon of white vinegar to form a solution.

Dip a small piece of cloth into the solution

Rub the wet piece of clothing gently on the stain until it totally disappears.

Make sure you know the kind of cleaner to user

You are always advised to check the upholstery cleaning tag code to establish the kind of cleaner to use. The tags are interpreted as shown below.

W - this means that you can use water based cleaner on the upholstery because it will not damage it.

S- This means you can clean the upholstery using a dry cleaning solvent or any other water-free product. This kind of cleaner will not damage the fabric.

WS- This means that you can use either dry cleaning or water based cleaner to get rid of dirt from the fabric without damaging it.

X- This means that you should not apply any of the two when cleaning the fabric as they may damage it. Instead seek professional advice on how to go about the cleaning process.

Always remember that failure to follow these simple instructions may lead to damaging of the upholstery altogether and you will be forced to either replace it or buy a new set of furniture.

Ensure that the cleaning method employed is good for the type of material the upholstery is made of;

There two different ways that material varies.

The kind of material used- there is a very wide variety of materials that can be used to make upholstery. Some are even made using a blend of two fabrics. For you to be able to clean any given fabric, you need to be conversant with the methods used to clean such fabric. This information can easily be obtained through reading or through the help of an expert in the field. Lack of such critical knowledge can easily complicate the whole process.

The color of the material- it is important to keep the color of the material as well as the method used to dye it into account. Otherwise, you may end up losing the original color of the fabric by bleaching it.

These are just but tips on how to go about the cleaning process. It is always important to seek professional services since there are many upholstery cleaning companies here in Singapore.
